Parliament to probe the re-surgence of FGM in the Sebei and Karamoja regions
The speaker of parliament says there is need to probe the re-occurrence of the female Genital mutilation in sebei and karamoja regions.
She says the practice is being done openly despite the existence of FGM Act 2010.
She learnt that FGM practice has been turned into a religion which is being worshiped by community in the areas due to government lack serious action plan to stop the practice.
In the meeting with sebei and karimajong elders held at parliament ,the speaker found out that there some leaders in sebei sub region who support the FGM practice in the night and in day time are seen as against the practice which prompted her to ask names of such people .
Sebei laeders told the speaker that FGM surgeons some times use church songs as they cut girls to divert law enforcement officers attention of going to such places as they further this practice in the community.
Kadaga said that its wrong for the government to give its responsibility to NGOs to fight FGM practice and asked the ministry of gender to account for 200 million shillings .
The minister of state for Gender Peace Mutuzo reported that people profiteering from FGM use machetes after inciting the community to accept this illegal practice to protect themselves to fight any law agencies which could attack them.
Mutuzo said that a number of women go for FGM by influence of political aspirants mobilizing them as a strategy to be voted into political office in 2021.
