There was panic at Masaka Armoured Brigade barracks last night when one soldier shot and killed two of his colleagues guarding the technical store, reports Edward Bindhe for Uganda Radio Network.

The soldier, Private Joseph Arioni, then picked the guns of the two soldiers he killed and run away.

The barracks is located in Kasijagirwa village, in Katwe-Butego Division.

Captain Benon Mutatina, the Masaka Armoured Brigade Political Commissar says the incident happened at around midnight when Joseph Arioni, a soldier attached to the barracks "went wild" and opened fire at two soldiers who were guarding what he calls a technical store.

He says the two soldiers only identified with one name each, as Babugo and Baingana, died instantly.

Joe Walusimbi, the Masaka Resident District Commissioner says the shootout was from within the barracks.

The army says it is still investigating the shooting.

Police this morning picked the bodies of the soldiers and took them to Masaka hospital mortuary.
